Cordyceps sinensis is a renowned medicinal herb, celebrated for its exceptional efficacy and dubbed the "King of Chinese Medicine." Its price has steadily risen over the years, often compared to gold, earning it the nickname "soft gold." What gives it such a reputation? And what exactly are the Cordyceps mycelia that have been so popular in the market in recent years, with users claiming their efficacy is on par with Cordyceps sinensis? Let's try to explain.
This article covers the following:
- What is Cordyceps sinensis?
- The benefits of Cordyceps sinensis
- Why is Cordyceps sinensis so expensive?
- What are Cordyceps mycelia?
Cordyceps sinensis is a combination of the ghost moth larva and the Cordyceps fungus. In summer, the spores of the Cordyceps fungus are released from asci, infecting ghost moth larvae in the soil, parasitizing them, and feeding on their nutrients. After autumn and winter, the larvae gradually climb to the shallow layers of the soil, but their bodies are already filled with fungal hyphae, consumed to death and dried out. However, the shape of the larva is preserved, hence "winter worm." During spring and summer, the Cordyceps fungus begins to sprout from the larva's head, forming a club-shaped stroma that emerges from the soil, preparing to release fungal spores, resembling a small plant, hence "summer grass."
A complete Cordyceps sinensis consists of two parts: the mycelium (larval body) and the stroma (fungal ascocarp), with the following characteristics:
- Approximately 3 to 5 cm long and 0.3 to 0.9 cm wide.
- Surface is deep yellow to yellowish-brown, head is reddish-brown, and the stroma surface is dark brown or black.
- The insect body has a total of 8 pairs of legs. 3 pairs near the head, 4 pairs in the middle of the body, and one pair at the tail.
- There are about 20-30 annular rings on the body.
1. Anti-fatigue – Cordyceps sinensis effectively enhances the energy produced by human mitochondria, thereby increasing the body's resistance to fatigue and cold.
2. Boosts immunity – Cordyceps sinensis enhances the phagocytic ability of the body's mononuclear phagocyte system, significantly boosting immunity.
3. Inhibits tumors – Research reports indicate that the polypeptides and nucleosides in Cordyceps sinensis can effectively inhibit nucleic acids and proteins, achieving an anti-tumor effect.
4. Regulates heart, liver, kidney, and respiratory systems – Cordyceps sinensis can improve the heart's hypoxia tolerance, aid detoxification and protect the liver, prevent emphysema, and alleviate kidney damage from chronic diseases.
5. Regulates blood lipids – Cordyceps sinensis can effectively lower cholesterol and triglycerides in human blood and increase beneficial high-density lipoprotein.
Why is Cordyceps sinensis so expensive?1. Scarce supply
The Cordyceps sinensis production areas in China are geographically narrow, mainly found in high-altitude regions (3,000 to 5,000 meters) such as Tibet, Sichuan, Qinghai, Yunnan, and Gansu.
2. High collection costs
Cordyceps sinensis is distributed in high-altitude areas where humans are difficult to adapt. Only a few plateau residents can undertake the collection work. The collection process is dangerous, and the daily collection quantity is limited, resulting in extremely high collection costs.
3. High market demand
Cordyceps sinensis has remarkable efficacy and is a supreme health tonic, thus always in high demand.
What are Cordyceps mycelia?Cordyceps mycelia are fungal strains isolated from Cordyceps Sinensis and produced through artificial fermentation. Cordyceps mycelia are cultivated from the original Cordyceps sinensis strain and contain the essential nutrients of Cordyceps sinensis. Their price is lower than Cordyceps sinensis, yet their efficacy is comparable. The Institute of Chinese Medicine and the Institute of Biotechnology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong found that artificially cultivated Cordyceps mycelia meet the Grade 1 standard for cordycepin content (an evaluation indicator in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia). From a Western medical perspective, adenosine is beneficial for the health of the cardiovascular system, kidneys, lungs, liver, and central nervous system. The Chinese University conducted a clinical study involving 172 citizens, finding that about 70% of those who consumed Cordyceps sinensis mycelia for one month showed significant improvement in their physical condition, as well as easier sleep and stronger concentration.
